It helps teams organize and sequence their collective ideas;

It is easy to add to or reduce the data being looked at and worked with because it is card or sticky note driven; and

It is easy to sort the collected information.

PREPARATION

Make sure you have an ample supply of index cards (use sticky notes if you prefer).

Use different colors and sizes; and

Have enough space available so the cards can be spread out, arranged, and rearranged as you build your board (use a table, chalkboard, wall, or the floor!).

HOW
First, the topic is clarified and agreed upon (posted up for all to see). Each person writes all his or her thoughts related to the topic with a limit of one idea per card. Through discussion, cards are sorted and categorized on a 'board'. Once everyone is in agreement with the sequence of ideas (or narrative), detailed info or action plans are provided to support each silo of cards. Afterwards, assess cards withdrawn during sorting process. This technique has many possibilities so improvise!
