AFFINITY DIAGRAM
Use this technique to generate and organize large numbers of ideas into natural groupings that are based on the relationships among the ideas. A value of this technique is its focus on broad-based information, rather than on detailed specific thinking about specific topics. It encourages paradigm-breaking thinking because it focuses on both quantity and relationships.
TO CREATE AN AFFINITY DIAGRAM
Identify the issue to be addressed by the team. Ask, "What are the issues involved in...?"

Brainstorm ideas around the topic. Use index cards or sticky notes to record ideas, one idea per card.

Post written ideas in random order. Spend time clarifying ideas.

In silence, sort ideas into related groupings. Each person arranges the posted ideas as he or she sees fit (follow intuition not analytical thinking).

Capture the essence of each grouping with a header card that identifies the common theme of the idea group.

Show the diagram to others who might be affected by the problem resolution. Ask for their input and critique. Add any new ideas that surface.

When you are through, you will have a pictorial representation of all issues and thoughts related to your problem or topic. Next, the team will have to address core problems, root causes, viable solutions, and so on.
